For a PPP session we had we watched a talk/lecture from Johnny Cupcakes about how he became successful and where he started from. I found this very useful as I guess as a student I sometimes feel whether I'm on the right path or not due to pressure and doubts that I'm not good enough. But it shows that almost everyone has or have had these doubts and its best to overcome them rather than give up and take the easy route. Johnny Cupcake's is now a successful global brand and it all started out from when Johnny was is school and he made his year a yearbook, managing to influence the parents and students to buy this book that did not exist yet, he then made a huge profit from the books once they were published and sold.

Sam Small:

This is an artist I found on the AIGA website. There wasn't many self branding designers to choose from but out the selection I found this designer stood out the most. After building up research and blogging about other designers self branding I've found that I'm more attracted to bright colours with the use of vector shapes on a crisp white background. For me I think its clean and minimal but still looks interesting and atheistically pleasing. I would have to decide whether I wanted to use hand rendered type or stick to a simple serif/san serif type which will enable me to focus on other hand drawn things.

Sandra Connors:

This is another one that stood out from the website and I think has a clear message. You can tell from the logo that it a mixture of two different cultures. I also liked the little owl you get with the package as the logo is incorporated into the design. This I think works extremely well and makes it interesting from the bog standard business card. I'm not too sure whether the mint colour works well with the green, I personally would of went for a more minimal and clean look maybe with a white background.

Esther Longmore:

This is a designer I found on cargo collective. I thought the majority of the branding on the website looked quite similar and didn't really have anything special to offer, this is bad I suppose because for your own personal brand you need to stand out from the rest. Anyways this branding stood out to me because of the really minimal and clean vector patterns, this is something I am considering to do myself so I think it would be good to get an example.

Amanda Eve:

Another example of a self branding designer on Cargo Collective. Now this branding I really like and think it has quite a strong impact. The bright brush strokes of the type contrast with the white background which creates an impact on the card making it really stand out.

Joe Elam:

This is an designer I found on Behance who I thought stood out from the rest. I like the use of the vectored stag as I think it signifies independence and leadership, the fact that is it on a white background also makes it have an impact on the business card and keeps it clean and simple. This is  definitely something I want to take into account for my own business card as in the PPP session I discussed the use of animals to represent me as a person and take a more humours approach.

Amanda Mohlin:

Another designer that caught my eye on Behance. As I am thinking of incorporating some type of pattern into my business card I think this is a strong example of how to do it right. Also the use of hand rendered type that is used I absolutely love, its so personal and works well with the space on the business card without looking sloppy and cramped. I would definitely like to receive this business card myself as the pattern on the back too is really athsetically pleasing.

Amy Slatem:

Another design that I picked from Behance. I guess what really stood out for me was the use of colour and the hand rendered type, as I'm developing more as a designer I'm becoming more fond of hand rendered type and illustrations. The bright colours and simple vector designs I think work extremely well and make it more interesting. It if influencing me to do some illustrations in my work, well I can always experiment and see whether it would be successful or not.

* How to be a graphic designer without loosing your soul

What is a brand?
What is an identity?
What is a logo?
       Product, range and distribution

Moo - Buinsess card

Ideas for business cards that reflect me as a creative:

- Furry business cards/different textures and skins
- Animals that represent me
- Animals that represent different traits in my personality

Who are you now?
I feel a lot more independant moving to Leeds, the course has been challenging and demanding but also enjoyable. I've loved every minute and its helped me grow as a designer, developing skills in Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator has benefited my work tremendously. At first it was all a bit overwhelming trying to absorb so much information at once, but after the lectures and seminars I've learnt so much more than i've done in any other education.

Experiences?
Visits to galleries, exhibitions and galleries have really brought me and broadened my mind. Coming from a small town there is not much choice design wise, Leeds is full of energy and theres always something going on. As a growing designer it has opened my mind at how much design is in the world, it surrounds us without us realising and that is what uni has mainly taught me. Tone of voice wise, I think because i'm an energetic person needs vibrancy and bold colours.

Creative concerns?
Over the year I have gained the confidence to become more critical at analysing other pieces of work, before I thought everything was just nice. Now I find myself analysing work and looking to see if its successful and appropriate and just a well made piece of design. The course has also made me more aware of online creative blogs, this is now something I check weekly which I never used to do. I think it is essential to keep up with the news on design and see what other designers are putting out there.

What 'Brands' me?
I chose in my business cards to use a san serif bold font called Governor, this I think reflects myself as a person. I love bold yet minimal design as I think it looks more visually exciting. I chose a vibrant colour for the background to represent my personality, I see myself as a positive person and have a optimistic look on almost everything. I believe we create our own happiness and thats what I strive to do, the course has matured and developed my character and I'm excited for whats to come in the future.

I decided to go for a business card even though from the beginning it was the last thing I wanted to do. My original idea was to draw an animal that best represented myself and put onto a poster which is something you get free when you get my pack. I even got the class to vote for which animal would best suite me (a camel) but given the timescale and errors it would of been impossible to finish in time for submission. Although its half done I can still go back to it and work into it more. SO, I then asked people what my main feature was on my face and people said my smile. They described me as excitable, like a puppy and always bubbly. I took this into account and wanted to create something that would best represent this. After doing research on the internet and in books I decided I wanted to go for something minimal but energetic. My favourite colour is orange, plus its a very energetic warming colour so I knew it would be appropriate. The minimal smiley in the center represents my happiness, I kept it very minimal to try get more of an impact. The 'Oh Hi' is one of the most things I say everyday so again I thought it could be quite humorous and appropriate to use. The back of the business card I used the large 'Hi', I thought it looked quite interesting as it looks almost like shapes with no purpose until you look again and see that infact its a word.

Chris Wood:

These set of business cards are by Chris Wood. I love how minimal yet vibrant they are, the crisp white and vivid orange make such an eye catching impact it draws your attention instantly. this is something I'd like to consider for my own business cards.

Tyhe Reading:

These set of business cards are by Tyhe Reading. Again I love the simplicity but vibrant use of colour, I think it just draws your attention instantly. However the designs may not reflect the artist they are promoting, I would like to go for something a lot more personal.

Oh Hui Min:

These are another set of finely designed minimal self branding designs. Again I love how minimal and simplistic it is but has an impact that stays in your head, it especially looks nice on different coloured stock. The first one I love the vibrancy and energy, however again I don't think it reflect what the designer is about.

These set of business cards are by Rosie Gopaul. I love the simplicity and minimalism, It creates more of an impact which is something I want to do in my own work. The outside edges coloured in yellow works really well and adds vibrancy to the business cards.
